The original Spanish is:Entre los vicios de la democracia hay que contar la imposibilidad de que alguien ocupe allí un puesto importante que no ambicione.
This problem with democracy to which Gómez Dávila refers here is well known. It is also reminiscent of the phrase "Nolo episcopari"; the only suitable man to become a bishop was one who did not want to become a bishop.
