English translations of the aphorisms of Nicolás Gómez Dávila
The original Spanish is:
ReplyDeleteNo hay ideas que ensanchen la inteligencia, pero hay ideas que la encogen.
This seems to me to be one of the aphorisms in which Gómez Dávila speaks of "intelligence" (inteligencia) as a specific faculty of the soul, and not just as a quality of individual men. That is why I have translated it here with the definite article as "the intelligence."
